The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has confirmed that the newly redeveloped Terminal 2 at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) will begin operations on 27 May. The facility’s reopening marks a significant phase in the airport’s long-term expansion plan to enhance efficiency and passenger capacity.
Speaking at a Lunar New Year celebration, AAHK Chief Executive Officer Fred Lam Tin-fuk said that 15 airlines are scheduled to move to the upgraded terminal in stages once it opens. He added that seamless connectivity between Terminals 1 and 2 will be maintained through the Airport Express, ensuring smooth and convenient transfers for travelers.
Terminal 2’s redesign emphasizes a vibrant, contemporary aesthetic, blending youthful elements with cutting-edge technologies. Passengers can look forward to an improved travel experience featuring smart facilities, enhanced self-service options, and a greater selection of restaurants and retail outlets.
Lam also noted a surge in passenger traffic during the current Lunar New Year travel period, with daily volumes surpassing 200,000 on multiple days. To manage the seasonal demand, additional staff have been deployed to support crowd control and maintain efficient operations across the airport.
Closed since 2019 to accommodate construction work for HKIA’s Third Runway System, the terminal previously served mainly low-cost carriers. Its reopening will not only ease congestion at Terminal 1 but also reinforce Hong Kong’s position as a key international aviation hub.
