FlySafair has lowered its dynamic fuel surcharge by 40% compared with the peak levels recorded in March, reflecting a decline in jet fuel costs and improved supply conditions in the aviation fuel market.
The South African airline said the latest reduction was driven by better availability of Jet A1 fuel and lower refining margins, both of which have contributed to a decrease in fuel expenses.
The surcharge was first introduced in March after tensions in the Middle East disrupted global oil supply routes, causing jet fuel prices to rise sharply. At the time, FlySafair implemented the charge as a separate item on ticket purchases and pledged to review it weekly in line with fuel market movements.
According to data provided by the airline, the most significant reduction since the surcharge was introduced has now been implemented. On the Johannesburg-Cape Town route, the surcharge dropped from a peak of R832.60 on 30 March to R491.01 on 2 June. The Cape Town-Durban route saw the charge decrease from R840.65 to R495.69, while the Johannesburg-Durban surcharge fell from R460 to R271.23 during the same period.
FlySafair said the lower charges demonstrate its commitment to passing fuel-cost savings on to customers while maintaining transparency in its pricing structure.
“We’re encouraged to see some relief in jet fuel prices, and we’re pleased to be able to pass that benefit on to our customers,” said Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair.
“When we introduced the surcharge, we committed to reviewing it weekly and reducing it as soon as conditions allowed. This latest adjustment reflects that commitment to transparency and fairness.”
The airline noted that jet fuel prices remain closely tied to global oil markets and geopolitical developments, meaning future surcharge adjustments will continue to depend on prevailing market conditions.
FlySafair also confirmed that it will maintain its weekly review process and continue publishing fuel surcharge information on its website, allowing passengers to monitor route-specific charges and any subsequent changes.
