Kuwait’s ambitious upgrade of its international airport is nearing a major milestone, with Phase 3 of the Kuwait International Airport development project now 88 percent complete, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The program forms a core component of the nation’s aviation and infrastructure transformation strategy as it prepares for expanded capacity once the new Terminal 2 becomes operational.
DGCA Planning and Follow-up Director Eng. Ahmed Hussein said the current phase focuses on four critical elements: construction of a third runway, comprehensive infrastructure upgrades, a new air traffic control tower, and the redevelopment of the eastern runway.
Previous phases, including the new runway, tower and infrastructure enhancements, have been fully completed.
Reconstruction of the eastern runway will begin as soon as the third runway becomes operational, with completion targeted within 14 months. Valued at KD180 million, the project represents a significant step toward positioning Kuwait International Airport among the region’s most technologically advanced hubs.
The DGCA has outlined 11 additional projects to enhance air navigation, meteorological systems, and runway capacity, marking a major leap in operational readiness and efficiency as Kuwait strengthens its role in global aviation.
