Air traffic at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka was temporarily suspended on Saturday afternoon after a massive fire broke out at the airport’s cargo village, a key hub for imported goods.

The blaze started around 2:30 p.m., engulfing storage areas where imported shipments are kept. The airport’s executive director, Md Masudul Hasan Masud, confirmed the suspension of all arrivals and departures at 3:45 p.m., citing safety concerns amid ongoing firefighting operations.
Authorities from multiple agencies swiftly mobilized to the scene. According to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority and Fire Service and Civil Defence units are leading the containment efforts, assisted by two Bangladesh Air Force fire units. The Bangladesh Navy has also joined the operation to prevent the fire from spreading further.

Thick plumes of smoke were visible from several kilometers away, prompting heightened security measures around the airport. Emergency services have cordoned off the area, and incoming flights were diverted to nearby airports as precautionary measures.

As of the latest reports, no casualties have been confirmed, but the extent of the damage and the cause of the fire remain under investigation. Airport officials said flight operations would resume once the situation is fully under control and safety checks are completed.

Further updates are expected as firefighting efforts continue into the evening.
