Passengers arriving at Abu Dhabi’s airports could soon exit the terminal in as little as 12 minutes, thanks to a new agreement aimed at streamlining border and customs procedures.
Abu Dhabi Airports has signed an agreement with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) to enhance passenger flow, border control, and customs services across the emirate’s five airports.
Smart Travel System Cuts Immigration Time to Seconds
At the heart of the agreement is the “Smart Travel” initiative — an advanced biometric system enabling travellers to clear immigration in as little as seven seconds through facial recognition and smart gate technology.
The initiative supports Abu Dhabi Airports’ goal of delivering a “gate-to-kerb” experience in under 12 minutes, allowing passengers to move seamlessly from arrival gate to exit.
Implementation Across Five Airports
The system will be rolled out across:
- Zayed International Airport
- Al Ain International Airport
- Al Bateen Executive Airport
- Delma Island Airport
- Sir Bani Yas Island Airport
- Scaling for Growing Passenger Volumes
With over 29 million passengers passing through Abu Dhabi’s airports in 2024, the partnership aims to enhance operational efficiency and ensure readiness for continued global traffic growth.
The agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony on October 6, 2025, at Zayed International Airport, attended by Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, and Mohammed Ahmed Abdullah Al Kuwaiti, Acting Director General of Ports at ICP.
